Happy Halloween from Leisure Time RV

Halloween will be here before you know it and if your travel plans have you situated at a campground or resort, you can still celebrate the holiday with “spirited” activities.

Halloween History

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Evening and All Hallows’ Eve, dates back to the ancient Celtic Samhain festival celebrating the ending of the harvest season. One belief is on October 31, when the worlds of the dead and the living overlap, the dead come back to cause damage. Costumes and masks, along with bonfires, became part of the festival to ward off evil spirits or attempt to appease them.

The “trick-or-treat” part of Halloween is similar to a practice in the middle ages known as “souling” when the poor would go from house to house asking for food in return for prayers for the dead celebrated on All Souls Day. Versions of Halloween activities were brought to the US by Scottish and Irish immigrants in the 19th century.

Halloween Activities

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends or family, or you have children and teens along, there are plenty of ways to “spook” up the day with some ingenuity and creative fun.

  • Stop at a local farmer’s market and purchase a pumpkin. Scoop out the insides and carve a scary face on the pumpkin. Place an electric candle inside the pumpkin to cast an eerie glow at your door or inside the RV to set the Halloween mood.
  • Make a night of it with Halloween inspired snacks and movies. If you have young children, watch an age appropriate movie together. When they’ve gone to bed, put on one of the classic thriller movies of all time for the adults.
  • Buy plain or frosted cupcakes or a batch of plain sugar cookies at the market. Using frosting and tubes of icing, let your inner Halloween soul help you design features on each item such as skeletons, scary eyes, and demonic mouths. Serve goodies with hot chocolate around the campfire while telling scary stories.

If you’d like to get away for a short mini vacation and would like to try the RV lifestyle, stop by Leisure Time RV and ask about their rentals. This is a great way to experience over-the-road travel before buying a new or used model.

Football Tailgating in your RV

Used RV Oklahoma

This time of year many Oklahoma RV owners turn their RVs into traveling tailgate parties. If you love your football and want to take your RV to the game, here are some tailgating tips from Leisuretime RV:

  • Look into parking ahead of time to find a place that has room for your RV.
  • Get there early to beat the bulk of the crowds and to allow plenty of time for set up and partying.
  • Have a recycling bag available for aluminum cans.
  • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy if you are grilling outside.
  • Take plenty of folding chairs for your guests. Tailgating can last hours and you’ll want your guests to be comfortable.
  • Make sure you have the pre-game show on local radio or television to lead up to kick-off and have team marching band music available prior to the start of the pre-game show.
  • Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.
  • Use team colored paper plates and cups. You may not even have to purchase “Officially Licensed” products, as many party and dollar stores have an assortment of colors available.
  • Decorate with team color streamers, banners, and flags.
  • Have a vegetarian food choice for guests who don’t eat meat.
  • Have games available like corn-hole or plan a team trivia competition with small prizes.
  • Take pictures and create a memory board to display at future tailgate parties.
  • Some bulk candy departments have M&M type candies in a variety of colors. Mix up a batch in your team’s colors.
  • Have a designated driver plan.
  • Plan on staying after the game until the lot clears. Have extra snacks and beverages for the after-party. You might also use the after party as an opportunity to clean up.

Tailgating can be a great deal of fun even if you don’t have tickets to the game. If they have satellite, many RVers can enjoy the game from the comfort of their traveling home. It allows for you to enjoy the atmosphere of game day without the expense (or bad weather elements) involved in sitting in the stadium.

Leisure Time RV is here for every season you use your RV. Sales, parts, services and accessories, Leisure Time RV is your Oklahoma RV dealership.

Visiting Quartzsite, AZ, For A Winter Trip

Photo Courtesy of Ace Armstrong via Flickr Creative Commons

There are literally millions of destinations to visit in your Oklahoma City RV, but not all of them are attractive and welcoming in the winter. Travelers tend to stick to the extreme south and southwest when planning for camping or boondocking after October. If you have never traveled to a mecca for camper and fifth wheel travel before, Quartzsite, AZ should be your next destination.

A Ghost Town

This very small town remains desolate and nearly empty through the summer, except for a few brave fulltime residents. However, falling temperatures and frigid snows drive thousands of people to seek out the winter warmth of Arizona. The town itself is home to numerous well-equipped campgrounds, but boondocking and dry camping out in the desert is also very popular. The area first became popular due to its high level of gemstone deposits – hence its name. Many campers who winter in Quartzsite now could care less about rocks, but instead seek out the warmth and companionship offered by such a large gathering of RV lovers.

Big Time Boom

RV Adventuring reports that the AZ Highway Department estimates that nearly a million people visit this spot for the annual vacation and RV show that has been put on for over 40 years. There are also other gatherings and events held during the winter, including a gemstone show and car shows for classic auto lovers. The entire destination is geared towards people who love traveling and who don’t want to sit indoors through winter. Hiking, boating, and other outdoor sports can all be enjoyed during the mild temperatures.

Near The Attractions

Quartzsite, AZ is the ideal stop for travelers that love the wilderness. There are thousands of acres of Bureau of Land Management space to explore, in addition to the Imperial National Wilderness Refuge and Kofa National Wilderness Refuge. Finally, don’t forget about Lake Havasu. It’s 50 miles north of the town, but its sparkling waters are well worth a day trip in your Oklahoma RV. The town itself is full of small shops and temporary buildings to cater to visitors, and grocery stores and other suppliers can be found within just 15 to 25 miles down the highway.

Think and Chunky Spaghetti Sauce

New Oklahoma RV

Many of us who love the RV lifestyle love to cook and keep our menus fresh and interesting. Sometimes it is not a matter of re-inventing the wheel, but just putting a new twist on an old standard.

Leisure Time RV, your Oklahoma RV Dealership, offers you this recipe that will add a little more spice and texture to your spaghetti dinner. It is our recipe for Chunky Vegetable Beef or Turkey Spaghetti Sauce that is perfect for fall RVing.

The ingredients you will need include:

1 lb. of your choice of ground beef or ground turkey

1 large onion

1 large green pepper

6 baby Bella mushrooms

1 medium carrot

1 medium celery stalk

2 tablespoons of crushed red pepper flakes

1-24 oz. jar of your favorite marinara sauce

Cut the onions into about ½ inch slices and cut into about ½ inch chunks. Cut the green pepper into ½ inch squares. Cut the mushrooms into 4 pieces each. Slice the carrot and celery stalk into thin slices.

In a large skillet brown the ground beef or turkey. As the beef or turkey begins to lose its pink color, add the cut chunks of onion and green pepper, along with the slices of carrot and celery. Stir in and cook for about 8 minutes until the vegetables begin to show signs of clearing. Add the chunks of mushrooms and cook for 3 or 4 more minutes, continuing to occasionally stir. Sprinkle in the crushed red pepper flakes and add in the marinara sauce. Stir until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed and the sauce begins to boil.

Serve this thick and chunky sauce over your favorite pasta, and top with some shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese. Add a side salad and some garlic bread and you will have a hearty meal for 4 or more. If you want a vegetarian edition, simply eliminate the beef or turkey.

Do you have a favorite hearty recipe for fall? Be sure to tell us about it. We are Leisure Time RV, your Oklahoma City RV dealer, and we will be pleased to show you our full line of 2014 RV’s that we now have in stock. For parts, service and new and used RV sales, see us at Leisure Time RV.

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

The oddly-named Truth or Consequences, New Mexico is a fair drive from the Leisure Time RV lot in Oklahoma, but well worth the trip as your inaugural RV adventure, or just a way to spend your week off from work.

The name comes from the radio quiz show of the same name. The producers of the show announced that they would be airing the show from any town that named itself Truth or Consequences, and the former Hot Springs, New Mexico took them up on the challenge.

Why was it called Hot Springs? Well, once you combine all of the hot springs that run throughout the town, you get 99 litres of hot water per second running through Truth or Consequences. These hot springs are a big part of the reason you should consider a visit to “T or C” as many New Mexicans call it.

Between the La Paloma springs, Indian Springs Bath House, Hay-Yo-Kay, and others, there are more hot springs in T or C than you can shake a stick at, and they all get the job done. You can feel your pores open up and your bones turn to liquid as you sink into the steamy pools of warm water. Step under a cold shower or jump in the river afterwards for a refreshing plunge.

Beyond the hot springs, K-Bob’s Steakhouse, the only location in the franchise actually owned by the Santa Fe company, can serve up a mean sirloin after you’ve spent the afternoon soaking.

T or C is a quiet, small town with a population of less than 7,000. If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend away from home or a pit stop to recharge your batteries on the way across the Southwest, Truth or Consequences will help to reenergize, rejuvenate, and refresh your body and mind.

Best Smartphone Apps for the RVer

Oklahoma City Used RVAt Leisure Time RV we are always happy to introduce someone to the RV lifestyle. People adopt the RV lifestyle for a variety of reasons, and adapt to the lifestyle in a variety of ways.

One aspect that takes some getting used to is the planning side of RVing. We are constantly impressed with the variety of approaches people take to planning their trips. We have customers with maps that are practically falling apart, with routes and previous destinations marked in hi-lighter. Some mark their travels with window stickers. More and more we are seeing our customers using smartphone apps.

There are a variety of apps available that many will find useful in all of their travels and some are custom designed for campers and RVers. If you are an Oklahoma RV lover with a smartphone, you may want to check out some of these apps.

Gas Buddy: This is a popular website and now a popular smartphone app. Gas Buddy features an updated list of gas prices throughout North America. You can find out the gas prices where you are or where you are headed. Gas Buddy is a must for RVers looking to save on fuel… and who isn’t?

Oh Ranger! Park Finder: This is a great app for those who are partial to staying in National or State Parks. Pop in the city, state, or zip code and Oh Ranger! will give you the distance you are from the park, what it has for amenities, and even events going on at the park.

Hannibal, Missouri

If you’ve lived in Oklahoma all your life, then a visit to Leisure Time RV isn’t just a simple shopping trip, but a step towards adventure, a way to live not only in one other state for a little while, but in several, because when you take on the RV lifestyle you make the road your home.

If that road takes you to Missouri, you’re going to find your hands full with cool stuff to do. Before you get overwhelmed, allow us to suggest a visit to Mark Twain’s old stomping grounds in Hannibal, MO.

Parking your RV in Nippers Park will give you a great view of the river where you can watch the boats go by. Mark Twain wrote about the Mississippi River quite a bit, and a visit here brings you right back to those times. Sitting on the riverbed looking at the passing boats, it almost feels like nothing has changed in a hundred years.

You can even take a ride on a riverboat if you like, but boatwatching is, in itself, a great way to kill an afternoon in Missouri.

While you’re here, you’ll want to grab a bite at Lula Belle’s, located in a former 1950’s bordello and serving fine dining from award winning chefs. This celebrated restaurant is a crown jewel in Hannibal.

The Mark Twain cave, which features in Tom Sawyer, offers hour long guided tours where you can experience Twain’s stories first hand. A spectacular, breath taking stop in Hannibal if you have the time and a good pair of hiking shoes to make the trek. The twisting, turning, labyrinthine cave is easy to get lost in, so we don’t suggest sneaking in after hours without a tour guide.

If you’re a fan of classic American literature or just Americana in general, give Hannibal a visit the next time you find yourself in the “Show Me State.”

Want to get into the RV lifestyle and visit Missouri, California, Florida, Texas, or wherever else the road can take you? Come by Leisure Time RV today to check out our extensive inventory of new and used RVs!
